Healthy Locs Begin With Understanding Your Hair

Healthy locs begin long before your next maintenance appointment. They begin with understanding your hair—what it needs, how it responds to your environment, and how your everyday habits influence its condition.

At The Loc Artistry by AV, education has always been an essential part of the care we provide. ROOTED grew from that philosophy: the belief that when we understand our hair, we're better equipped to care for it ourselves.

Your Hair Is Individual

One thing I often remind my clients is that what works for someone else's hair may not work for yours.

We all have different hair textures, densities, lifestyles, and environments. Even two people with the same type of locs may need completely different care routines.

That's why I encourage you to pay attention to your hair. How does it feel after washing? Does your scalp feel dry or irritated? Are your locs holding on to moisture, or do they feel dry shortly after you've hydrated them?

These are things worth noticing.

You don't need to become a hair expert. But understanding how your hair responds to different products and practices can help you make better decisions about its care.

Maintenance Is More Than an Appointment

I love seeing my clients for their maintenance appointments, but what happens between those visits matters just as much.

Your locs still need to be cleansed, hydrated, and protected.

And sometimes, the simplest things make the biggest difference.

Washing your hair regularly, paying attention to product buildup, protecting your locs while sleeping, and understanding when your hair needs moisture can go a long way.

I also want you to understand why you're doing these things.

When you understand the purpose behind your routine, caring for your hair becomes less about following instructions and more about recognizing what it needs.

Knowledge Changes How We Care for Ourselves

This is really where ROOTED comes in.

Over the years, I've realized how much of our personal care we hand over to other people. We rely on professionals to tell us what we need, what products to use, and when something isn't right.

There's absolutely a place for professional guidance. But I believe you should also feel confident caring for yourself.

That's what I want ROOTED to encourage.

Not perfection. Not complicated routines. Just a better understanding of your hair, your body, and the everyday practices that support your well-being.

Because the more you understand yourself, the more intentional you can become about how you care for yourself.

And that's a conversation worth continuing.

A Note From Amoy

Through The ROOTED Journal, I'll be sharing practical hair care education, experiences from behind the chair, and conversations about wellness and everyday life.

Some topics will be familiar. Others might challenge what you've always believed about caring for your hair.

My hope is that you'll leave each conversation knowing a little more than you did before—and feeling more confident about putting that knowledge into practice.

Welcome to The ROOTED Journal.
